The adrenal glands are 2 small, pyramidal shaped glands atop the kidneys. They perform numerous important functions for the body, and consist of two main parts, the medulla, and the cortex. The adrenal medulla responds to acute stress and produces epinephrine and norepinephrine. The adrenal cortex responds to physical/emotional stress and infection. The pituitary hormone ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is released as a result of stress and it governs adrenal cortex function. The cortex produces cortisol, aldosterone, and the androgens testosterone, DHEA, and androstenedione.
