Gymnema sylvestre (Asclepiadaceae), also known as Gymnema Leaf, Periploca of the Woods, Ram’s Horn and Miracle Fruit is a woody plant that grows in Africa, Australia, and South and Central India. It is an indigenous herb and a good source of many bioactive substances, with deep roots in history, being one of the major botanicals used in the Ayurvedic system.
Herbalists have used the leaves for more than 2,000 years. In India and China the bitter leaves of Gymnema sylvestre are known as ‘sugar destroyer,’ as it blocks a taste for sweetness for some time.
