Have you ever eaten so much pineapple that your tongue hurt? Or used pineapple to tenderize your meat? That’s Bromelain at work.

Bromelain is a group of digestive and proteolytic enzymes derived from the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). Because of these power-packed enzymes, pineapple has long been used to support tissue recovery and healing.

Bromelain breaks it up.

Proteolytic means “Protein breaking” and where Bromelain shines as a natural supplement is in the degradation of protein complexes that form as a result of injury or wear and tear.

When the body is subject to stress, injury, or plain old age, the immune system sends chemical messengers known as cytokines to the area to increase swelling, redness, and pain. These cytokines stimulate antibodies that then attach to the target bad-boys and mark them for immune destruction. Immune complexes often precipitate (come out of solution), which can be a problem since the body has to find a way to get rid of them, or else they’ll lodge in the tissues, clog things up and otherwise gum up the works. Immune complexes are helpful in an acute situation, but over time they can contribute to significant distress and discomfort. Bromelain chews up these complexes so they can be moved out via the kidneys, and optimal tissue function restored.
