Two ingredients found in magnolia's bark and seeds are of particular importance. They are Honokiol and Magnolol. These compounds seem to have free-radical fighting effects. Plus, honokiol may be involved in modulation of the key neurotransmitter known as GABA - which could promote a sense of calm.
It also appears that magnolia extract may support normal levels of the stress hormone - cortisol.
