Your Weight Loss Resolution

The “Battle of the Bulge” and the attempt to be victorious can be daunting and frustrating. Whether it’s those stubborn last few pounds you need to lose, reduction for health reasons, or the beginning of a journey to a completely new you, monthly goals are a way to assist in keeping your resolution and attaining your objective. Make your goals realistic by starting with just 10 pounds. Once you reach that target it gets easier to visualize the next 10 pounds of weight loss.

Please, let’s not call it a diet. The word diet has evolved from the Greek diaita meaning mode of life, through old French and Latin (diete and diaeta, respectively) meaning day’s allowance of food to an English version that most people associate with deprivation. Let’s go back to the Greek mode of life.

First, start small in changing your “mode of life”. Clean out your pantry and refrigerator. Buy more fresh fruit and vegetables. According to scientists at Harvard and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge people who cut calories lost an average of 13 pounds in six months; so trim 100 calories from your daily intake per day. Sounds hard but have a plain hamburger (no cheese), take the skin off your chicken, eat bacon instead of sausage, and replace mayonnaise with mustard. These are just a few things that you can try. Exercise while watching TV. Strength train your upper body with dumbbells or large cans of vegetables. Do core strengthening during commercial breaks on TV.

Second, if you are over 40 your metabolism is not the same as it was when you were 20 or even 30 years old. Metabolism is affected by age, gender, and hormone levels. If your endocrine (glandular) system is unbalanced and not working in harmony, your insulin levels could be up and thyroid down. This will make you hungrier. You will eat more and burn less calories. You may want to have a saliva test to check your hormone levels. After 40, mitochondria (in your cells to convert food to energy) slow down and/or die. You are not burning calories like before and can gain weight. Also if you are female, studies show that you will lose muscle mass twice as fast as a male.

Third, help is available. There are foods that will aid in boosting your metabolism. Here are just a few: Black pepper (peperine), tomatoes (lycopene), beans (fiber), ice water, oolong tea (polyphenols), spicy foods – chilies, cayenne pepper, berries (fiber), salmon (omega-3 fatty acids), celery, lemon juice, and apples. Many people cannot eat some of these foods and that is where supplements can support your efforts. Supplements may be used in addition or in place of dietary provisions.
