Flax seed, or linseed, comes from an herb plant that has been cultivated for centuries and used for food, medicine and fiber. Flax seed is a natural source of plant based essential omega-3 fatty acids.
In additional to high levels of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, flax seeds contain an abundance of micronutrients and are one of the best plant sources of lignans, or phytoestrogens, considered to have antioxidant properties. Flax is an excellent source of amino acids and vitamin E and is packed with important groups of B complex vitamins including riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, B6 and folates. Flax is also a rich source of minerals like manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium.
