Vegetarians and athletes who participate in frequent vigorous exercise are at highest risk for a lysine deficiency. Lysine helps the body absorb and conserve calcium and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendons and cartilage.
The most promising application of lysine is its use in managing and preventing painful and unsightly herpes sores caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). In order for HSV to replicate, it needs arginine, another common amino acid. L-Lysine competes with L-Arginine for absorption and entry into tissue cells, and when L-Lysine is present, it inhibits the growth of HSV by knocking out L-Arginine.
Suggested Usage
One to four (1-4) capsules daily as a dietary supplement, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Best taken between meals.
